Mobility and Migration

Present position: Associate Professor of Social Statistic at the Department of Economics and Law, University of Cassino and Southern Lazio

Education: Bachelor degree in Economics at the University of Roma, La Sapienza

Research interest: The research activity paid attention to specific population groups. On the whole, some studies tend to identify relations among social and demographic variables, even if they are related to the behavioural analysis of specific population targets. Later on, when the University Reform was put into effect, an interest for the study of statistical methodology applied to learning came out. In particular, she devoted specifically to the following topics listed below.

The topic has been dealt with by considering some effects in the social and economic sphere. The survey was planned to evaluate opinions, attitudes and behaviours of Italians employers towards immigrants and foreigner population. Moreover it has been analyzed the immigrant residential choice in order to know the residential biography of immigrant living in our country. All studies use original data coming from surveys where the author followed all steps concerned (from simple structure to the draw up of the questionnaire to the application of empirical models).

Recently she devoted to the analysis of Second Generation in Italy attended to the national project launched by Gianpiero Dalla Zuanna (Padua University).

Network analysis results were obtained concerning the foreign performance and integration in the school.

The complexity and lack of statistical sources make difficulty the study of foreign deviance. Improvements come in the last years which allowed to develop further analysis. In particular several indicators have been developed in order to follow longitudinally people guilty of illegal acts.

Scope of this survey is that of evaluating the differential attitudes of Italians towards foreign immigration in an urban contest (in particular carried out in Rome on a sample formed by 1000 interviewers). There are two components which contribute to the making of the attitude: 1) a component that stands for the ethnic prejudice; 2) a component inherent to a will of discrimination towards the foreigners, seen not as a different person, but only as a potential rival for the fruition of social services. The assumption is that for each social class there exists a differentiation in the attitude influenced by the discriminatory component. Plausibly, upper classes feel less preoccupied, while working class are liable to feel the foreign presence as rival. The found data give rise interesting information: from the structural model we notice the importance of two variables qualification and system of value which contribute to the forming of attitudes in the population. In this survey a wide series of information about characteristics of interviewed was collected with particular reference to the biographical history and specifically on mobility history. One original hypotheses was tested for which in Rome residential mobility would cover mainly limited zone and that social status could intervene to explaining the size of the move (lower class would be inferior than upper class).

Availability of individual record at 1991 Census allowed the author to make an in-depth analysis on internal movement (daily travel) among Rome areas via the building of origin/destination commuting matrix. Then some measures of the self-contained flows by sex and age were built. Other research deal with social differentiation inside the city and segregation of minority groups

Recently a specific topic regards the evaluation of the University teaching is developed. In this field several contributions have been recently proposed. Indicator systems produced by Universities or other institutions are discussed and compared. New indicators and measures, especially linked to the territorial attraction capability, are proposed.

Awards/Scientific Positions: She attended to various research project supported by Murst and “La Sapienza” University. Recently she takes part of a working group on “Social cohesion: Mediterranean identity and population in the urban systems. Principles for politics of sustainable development” supported by CNR.
