Part VI – Research Activities

Prof. Francesco Misiti in the last years, has developed the following scientific research lines:
1) study of the mechanisms responsible for amyloid-dependent-neuro-toxicity;
2) study of erythrocyte signaling pathways involved in the regulation of cell metabolism;
3) study of the structural and functional properties of protein, with particular regard to hemoglobin;

1) These studies have had as its main purpose the characterization by a biochemical point of view of the correlation between the redox state of the amyloid peptide, its state of aggregation and its neuro-toxic activity.
2) These studies investigate the mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation of the erythrocyte. Our working hypothesis is that the association with oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation regulates human erythrocyte metabolism through a mechanism involving the interaction deoxyhemoglobin and / or glycolytic enzymes and banda-3.
3) This research line investigates the structure-function relationships of human hemoglobin variants. The study of the haemoglobins of different species of vertebrates allows to highlight the interesting complex regulatory mechanisms that, during evolution, have developed in response to physiological needs of a given species.
