    2) Brushless DC drives, Model of DCB machines, hints on the operating point of permanent magnets. Steady-state model, torque characteristics, operating domain, efficiency.
    Magnetic configurations. Calculation of the phase inductance.
    Dynamic model.
    Converters for DCB drives, electronic commutation, torque, speed and position control.
    PID regulators
    Sensorless techniques for BLDC drives, implementation on an STM32 system.

    3) Drives for synchronous machines (ACSM AC Brushless).
    Polyphase machines, dynamic model. Model d-q. Transformations of Park, Clarke and their inverses.
    Control domain of isotropic and anisotropic AC Brushless machines.
    General information on implementation platforms.
    Position Sensorless control for PMSM motors. State and flow observers for permanent magnet synchronous machines. Model Reference adaptive Systems techniques. Luenberger observer. Prof. Di Stefano Roberto, associate professor of power electronic converters, electrical machines and drives at University of Cassino and Southern Lazio – Italy.

- He received the Laurea Degree in Electrotechnical Engineering at the University of Naples "Federico II"
- Since 1991 he is involved in scientific collaboration with the Industrial Engineering Department of University of Cassino by mean a cooperation agreement for the management of the scientific equipments.
- During 1992 he cooperates with the Electric Engineering Department of Naples University concerning the
research activity on “Step motors static and dynamic behaviour”.
- In the June 1992, he held a post-graduate course at University of Miskolc (Hungary) as part of TEMPUS project activity on the use of microcontrollers in electrical drives.
- He took part in the research project on the “Transportation systems inside intermodal junctions with unconventional drives: Control strategies and digital implementation” sponsored by the Italian National Research Council. In this period he developed an intensive research activity on the reliability of electronic control system for the cable transport, on the brushless electrical drives and digital microelectronics.
- In1993 he began a scientific cooperation in research “Electric machines in the electromechanical power systems” for the Electric Engineering Department of University of Naples.
In the same year he was assistant for the chair of Electric Machines of the University of Cassino Engineering Faculty.
- He cooperated with 'Multimedia s.r.l.' in Naples for the development of digital system based on programmable logic devices.
- In 1994 he is researcher at Industrial Engineering Department of University of Cassino.
- Since 1998 he is scientific coordinator of Industrial Electronics Laboratory of this University.
- Since 2004 he is Associated Professor for 'Electric Machines, Drives, and Static Conversion'.
- Since 2004 he is a Member of the Doctoral Board of the Doctoral School in ‘Electrical Energy Conversion' of the Second University of Naples.

The scientific production concerned with the study of special electric machines, advanced control of electrical drives, the implementation of control algorithms on digital systems based on microprocessor and FPGA devices, the study of sub-millimetric electromechanical devices. The most recent scientific activities is organized around five prevalent themes:
1) Permanent magnets axial flux machines;
The use of axial flux machines aroused considerable interest in recent years especially in applications such
as motors/generators for hybrid electric vehicles, turbines and micro-turbines for wind generation,
moreover, the geometrical characteristics of these machines (high aspect ratio between width and depth),
caught the attention of manufacturers of appliances that saw attractive opportunities in industrial drives
"direct-drive".
In this context, since 2004, an intense research activity was undertaken, as a natural continuation of a
previous activity about the axial flux machines and PCB stator windings (etched windings), which is
culminated with millimetric sizes machines. The new investigations was immediately oriented to the
identification of innovative solutions aimed at improving the efficiency and make an easier industrialization
of the prototypes by using composite materials and charged resins.
This theme was supported by a PRIN 2008 grant.
2) linear tubular actuators and generators;
These machines have earned a lot of interest in applications for the generation of renewable energy and
industrial applications. The research has focused on the optimization of the thrust/current ratio, on the
study of solutions with a high thrust density, and the use of alternative materials to the laminated iron for
the magnetic circuits.
3) advanced electric drive controls on FPGA devices.
The FPGA devices allow to perform not too complex processing tasks but in very short time.
This feature allows the implementation of specific algorithms for the control of electric drives that require
very rapid response times. At the same time more complex control systems, consisting of both FPGA
devices and microcontrollers, can be designed appropriately to distribute the control functions according
to the ratio [computational complexity] / [time response]. Sensorless control algorithms, that are best
suited to implementation on FPGA, have been implemented and tested.
4) study of the effects of PWM on electrical machines;
The study of the effects of PWM on electrical machines is still alive subject, given the effects produced
against the insulating materials life, mechanical constraints (bearings), overall drive performance, EMI
issues, etc. This research was carried out to identify the best strategies to reduce the negative effects on
the machine. Specific modulation techniques, which have considerable interest from the point of view of
industrial application, have been thoroughly investigated;
5) modulation techniques for soft-switching CSI converters
This is a topic of significant interest: the identification of efficient soft-switching conversion topologies for
CSI presents considerable difficulties. The technical solutions, proposed by the scientific community, make
use of reactive elements (inductors and transformers) that often affects the overall efficiency. The
research was aimed at identifying new topologies without or minimal reactive elements.
