    Maxwell's equations in vacuum and in media (general concepts). Maxwell's equations for sinusoidal signals. Dielectric media, normal media, conducting media. Electromagnetic energy and Poynting's theorems. Maxwell's equations for fields dependent on a single cartesian coordinate in the time domain and frequency domain, plane waves. Polarization of the electromagnetic field. Conditions of continuity for the electromagnetic fields at the interface between two media. Plane wave incident orthogonally on a plane interface between two dielectric media: definition of reflection and transmission coefficients. Plane wave incident orthogonally on a plane interface between a conducting and a dielectric media: the penetration depth. Orthogonal and parallel oblique incidence, Snell's law, Fresnel's coefficients for orthogonal and parallel incidence. Total reflection and Brewster's angle. Propagation in stratified media. Radiation condition at infinity. Vector potential, scalar potential. Radiation from elementary sources: the elementary dipole, the elementary coil, the Huygens' source. Radiated power and radiation resistance. Far field and reactive fields. Effective transmission height. The interference concept. Effective receiving height: elementary dipole and elementary coil. Images theorem and applications.

    Coaxial cable, wire line, TEM propagation. Circuit theory of transmission lines, voltage and current along a line, equations of lines in the time domain and frequency. Progressive and stationary solution along a line. Discontinuity along lines. The reflection coefficient and VSWR, Smith chart. Energy and power along the lines. Characterization of a two-port microwave network: the Z, S, ABCD parameters. Quarter-wave transformers, one and two-stubs adaptaters. Resonators. Guiding structures, modes TE, TM, TEM. Mode degeneracy and crosstalk. Waveguides. The phenomenon of cut-off in waveguide. The Brillouin diagram. Dispersion. Dielectric waveguide: an overviw. Attenuation of a guide. Coaxial cable, microstrip and stripline.

Gaetano Panariello was born in Herculaneum, Italy, in 1956. He graduated summa cum laude in Electronic Engineering from the University Federico II in Naples in 1980 and received the PhD in 1989 from the same University.
He was staff engineer in the Antenna Division of the Elettronica SpA until 1984, when he joined the Electromagnetic Research Group of the University Federico II in Naples, where he was from 1990 until 1992 Research Assistant, from 1992 until 2000 Associate Professor in the Department of Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering teaching Optics, Microwave circuit design and Radiwave Propagation. Since 2000 he joined the University of Cassino as Full Professor of Electromagnetic Field in the Department of Automation, Electromagnetics, Information Engineering and Industrial Mathematics.
Professor G. Panariello is a member of the Scientific Committee of the CNIT (National Inter-University Consortium for Telecommunication) and of the Scientific Committe of the SIEM (Italian Electromagnetic Society).

His research interests include inverse problems, non linear electromagnetic, analytical and numerical methods, microwave circuit design.
