Jeffery Wyss was born in 1957 in the U.S. His family moved to Italy were he completed his higher education with a degree in Physics from the University of Padova (Italy). As a high energy physicist he was an active member on the SLD experiment at SLAC (1987-94) and then at Fermilab on the CDF experiment (1991-2000). In 1995 he designed and coordinated the construction of SIRAD, the proton and heavy ion irradiation facility at the 15MV Tandem of the INFN laboratory of Legnaro (Italy). To the present time he is involved in the studies of radiation effects and testing of semiconductor detectors, microelectronic devices and systems for high energy physics and space applications. As of 2001 he is an Associate Professor of Physics on faculty of the University of Cassino and Southern Lazio (Italy) and is affiliated with the Department of Civil and Mechanical Engineering (DICeM) of Cassino. Jeff Wyss is also a technological research associate with the Padova section of the INFN, the Italian National Institute for Nuclear Research.

Research Activity:

From 1988 to 1990 I was active in the SLD experiment at the SLAC Linear Collider Stanford (USA) thanks to a scholarship of the INFN (National Institute of Nuclear Physics). SLD was a multi-purpose apparatus for the study of Z0 electroweak physics at the SLC electron-positron single pass collider. The Italian groups in SLD dealt with the construction, installation, setup and commissioning of the muon detector, whose sensitive part consisted of more than 10,000 limited streamer tubes readout inductively from a set of external electrodes: strips for muon tracking and pads for hadronic calorimetry. During this three year period at SLAC I took part, with increasing levels of responsibility, in all phases of installation and tuning of the detector. In particular, I participated in systematic studies for the identification of a new gas mixture capable of replacing the argon-isobutane mixture commonly used, but prohibited at SLAC for safety reasons. The choice finally fell on a ternary mixture in which the isobutane was almost completely replaced with CO2. I was also co-responsible for the tests of chambers of streamer tubes with cosmic rays prior to their inclusion in the final calorimeter.
When in 1990 the INFN decided not to fund further Italian activities at SLD, due to the low luminosity of SLC respect to the competing LEP collider at CERN, I moved the focus of my activities to the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia (FNAL, USA) and in 1991 I joined the CDF experiment at the Tevatron. At the time the Tevatron was the highest energy accelerator in the world and was at the forefront of elementary particle physics. CDF was undergoing general upgrade of the whole detector. Making good use of my experience in the development and use of gas detectors, I was involved in the refurbishing of the forward calorimeter which as sensing elements used gas tube detectors operating in the proportional mode. I directed test beam calibration tests and prepared the system of HV feed-back system of the gains of the tubes. I was at FNAL until 1993, thanks to a FNAL post-doc contract. During this period, which culminated in the first experimental evidence of the top quark, I participated to the analysis of CDF data in collaboration with the CDF group from Padova. In addition I collaborated with B. Denby in the development of innovative methods of multivariate analysis, in particular implementing a neural network, one of the first examples in high energy physics.
In the summer of 1993 I was called back to SLAC, with an MIT post-doc contract, to bring the muon tracking system back into full efficiency. The SLC had in fact finally started to operate well beyond the most optimistic predictions by making innovative and decisive changes to the procedures of operation. SLD finally recorded a significant amount of data and produced the most precise measurement of the Weinberg angle, fundamental parameter of the Standard Model, and made competitive measures in the physics of the bottom quark and the tau lepton. In addition to my responsibility for re-commissioning the muon detector strip system, I contributed to the measurement of the cross section of Z0 decay into pairs of tau leptons. My collaboration SLD experiment ended at the end of 1994; in that period of activity I have published more than 40 articles in Physical Review and Physical Review Letters in addition to 8 items on Nuclear Instruments and Methods.
I then returned to Italy and started to work with the group of Padova on the analysis of data collected by CDF, contributing in particular to the first observation of the top pair decay into the fully hadronic mode (event with six jets and no hard leptons). In parallel I continued to develop new analysis algorithms based on the use of Fisher discriminant analysis and neural networks. In the period 1995-1998 I benefited from research contracts from Padova Ricerche and the ECT* in Trento, while in 1999 I used a post-doc contract with LBNL (USA) to work on the Intermediate Silicon Layer project of the CDF upgrade. My presence and activities in CDF is documented by almost 240 articles in Physical Review and Physical Review Letters.

In 2001 I won tenure as Associate Professor at the University of Cassino for the Faculty of Engineering. The logistical problems introduced by the new and challenging teaching obligations and family responsibilities forced me to the painful decision to abandon the big physics experiments abroad and to focus instead on the R&D of new detectors and the construction and operation of a facility, then missing in Italy, for the study of radiation damage on semiconductor detectors and electronic devices and systems. These activities are based at the INFN of Padova and the INFN Laboratories of Legnaro (LNL).

My work in the field of radiation damage began earlier, when I first returned to Padova in 1995 where I coordinated the construction of SIRAD, the proton and ion irradiation facility at the 15 MV Tandem accelerator of the LNL. Radiation damage of a semiconductor device occurs when energy is depositied in the form of atomic displacement and/or ionization. The effects can be cumulative, due to displacement damage of the semiconductor lattice (bulk damage) or to ionization in the insulators, or instantaneous, i.e. Single Event Effects (SEE). SIRAD allows one to perform Displacement Damage Dose (DDD), total ionization dose (TID) and SEE susceptibility studies. I participated in several studies at SIRAD: the use of high concentrations of oxygen in silicon detectors to limit the increase in depletion voltage to counteract bulk damage; breaking mechanisms of power diodes; measurements of cross sections of SEE and the validation of many and diverse ASICs (custom) used in experiments in elementary particle physics and space experiments. To this day I coordinate the maintenance and the upgrades of SIRAD.
To improve the SIRAD capability in the field of SEE studies, I proposed to upgrade the line to include a Ion Electron Emission Microscope (IEEM), a tool that allows one to localize the entry points of individual ions as they impacts a microelectronic device. This is done by collecting and detecting the secondary electrons emitted from the impacted surface with a positions sensitive electron detector. This information is then temporally correlated to the presence of a malfunction of the device. From 2004 to 2006 I directed the IEEM project, an INFN funded project to construct a IEEM for SIRAD; the national working group was a collaboration of Cassino, Padova, and Rome Tor Vergata. The IEEM of SIRAD is now a mature system and has obtained the SEE sensitivity maps of power diodes and digital and analog devices used in space. My activities with the SIRAD facility is documented by more than 40 publications in Nuclear Instruments and Methods, and IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science.

More recently in Padova, from 2010 to 2012, I coordinated the intensive development and testing of monolithic pixel detectors in view of their use both in future experiments at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, and for applications in photonics. I directed the local (Padova) LePIX project, an INFN project to create an innovative sensor that integrates on a silicon chip both an advanced electronic front-end (realized in CMOS commercial process IBM 90nm) and PIN pixel detectors with high-resistivity silicon (which can then be depleted in tens of microns).

As of 2013, I coordinate NEUTARGS, a 3-year INFN project (2013-2015) for the development of targets for the production of intense beams of neutrons. NEUTARGS consists of three work packages: SEE (neutron-induced SEE in micro-electronics), FARETRA (Fast Reactor Simulator for Transmutation studies), and BNCT (Boron-Neutron Capture Therapy). The first two activities are the INFN SPES delta-phase projects, while BNCT is part of the INFN MUNES project. In particular I direct the Padova SEE work package which is developing a target for the production of fast neutrons with a differential energy spectrum comparable - in the range of 1-60 MeV energy - to that of the neutrons produced by produced in cosmic ray air-showers, cascades of particles initiated by very high energy galactic cosmic rays interacting with the atomic nuclei of the upper atmosphere. Atmospheric neutrons have always been of great concern for high altitude avionics, but they are also of growing importance for ground-based commercial electronics. Technology trends in electronics towards smaller structures, lower operating voltages, higher clock speeds and growing system complexity bring an increased susceptibility of devices and systems to SEE effects induced by neutrons.

In the same period and up through 2017, I also coordinated
a study group for the design of a fast Neutron and Proton Irradiation (NEPIR) facility at the high current proton cyclotron of SPES of LNL. The facility will deliver both a quasi mono-energetic neutron (QMN) beam with a controllable energy peak in the 20-70 MeV energy range and a complementary beam of fast neutrons with a continuous (white) energy distribution. Direct variable energy proton irradiation will be also available. The design of NEPIR is in an advanced stage. Indeed the work at Padova, under my direct supervision, was instrumental for LNL to obtain PREMIALE funds for SPARE (Space Radiation Shielding), an ASI/INFN project. Both NASA and ESA are focussing on human space exploration and a permanent Moon base and Mars exploration are now high priorities. Health risks due to cosmic radiation are a major showstopper for safe colonization and shielding is the only practical countermeasure, but it is poorly effective against the very high energy nuclei from galactic sources, but exposure to secondary neutrons remains even if the charged particles are stopped. New, highly hydrogenated materials are under development for the shielding of the spacecraft. Active shielding using high temperature superconductor magnets are a promising alternative and arguably the ultimate solution of the problem, but they also have to be tested for their radiation response. The SPARE project consists in a test campaign of active and passive materials using high energy protons and QMN neutrons at the accelerator facilities in Trento (TIFPA) and LNL (NEPIR). With this funding we have entered a new phase: the construction of NEPIR can begin in 2018.

In 2015 I coordinated the activies of the Scaltech INFN project at Padova. Read-out electronics for Future Experiments in High Energy Physics will have to face two key problems: extremely large radiation doses (up to 1 Grad in 10 years) and an extremely large number of channels (with increasing power consumption). The 65nm technology node is presently under investigation for the foreseen LHC upgrade, but it may not be sufficiently rad-hard.
The INFN Scaltech project investigated 28nm technology for possible applications in harsh radiation environments with the motivation that, being more scaled, it would hopefully be more rad-hard; in addition, production costs are comparable with respect to 65nm. In the project, both analog frontend and digital/mixed signal electronics will be developed. Radiation hardness assessment and radiation damage modeling are a crucial part of the project.
The collaboration develops in 5 Working Packages, shared among 3 INFN sections (Milano Bicocca, Pavia and Padova) and 2 foreign partners (EPFL and CERN). The INFN Padova section was in charge of irradiations and test structure characterization before and after irradiation.

As of 2017 I also participate in the IMPACT progect. IMPACT (innovative Medical Proton Achromatic Calorimeter and Tracker (iMPACT) is an ERC consolidator grant funded project, hosted by the University of Padova and supported by INFN. It aims to develop a high resolution and extremely fast proton computed tomography scanner system by exploiting technologies used for HEP detectors. The goal is to reach a clinically viable acquisition rate limit (recording 10^9 proton events in about 10 s) while ensuring a range resolution as close as possible to the circa 1% theoretical limit, ensuring material, instrumentation and running costs competitiveness. The scanner consists of a tracker system (a candidate is the ALPIDE pixel sensor developed by ALICE at LHC) and a highly segmented scintillator calorimeter developed at Padova. In the present design, the calorimeter is used to estimate the proton energy by measuring the stopping position. In 2017 my role was limited: I participated in proton irradiation experiments and data analysis to test a simplified mockup of the calorimeter prototype at the 7 MeV CN accelerator at LNL and at the 230 MeV proton cyclotron at TIFPA were the ALPIDE was also successfully tested. My activity in IMPACT will increase in 2018 (optimization studies, commissioning and irradiation experiments).
