    Generalities about electric power systems: generation, transmission, distribution, utilization; direct and alternative current; three-phase and single phase systems. Normal and abnormal operation.
    Appliances and the related classifications. Electric loads: utilization and contemporaneity factors.
    Electric components: cables, switches (breakers and fuses), relays, protection systems.
    Normal operating conditions: criteria for chosing and rating the system components.
    Abnormal operating conditions: criteria for chosing and rating the system components.
    Power supply and its classification: ordinary and emergency supply.
    Electric schemes and operation: criteria for chosing topology and managing the operation.
    Electric safety. Grounding system. Direct and indirect contacts. Electric system classification based on the operating status of the neutral and of the masses with respect to ground.
    Reactive power compensation. Centralized vs distributed approach. Reactive power rates.

since 2008 he is the scientific director of the Power System Laboratory "LaSE" of the University of Cassino (Università degli Studi di Cassino e del Lazio Meridionale);
In 1999 he received his PhD degree in Electrical Energy Conversion (Conversione dell'energia elettrica) at the Seconda Università di Napoli discussing the thesis "Probabilistic methods for steady state analysis of unbalanced three-phase systems (Metodi probabilistici per l'analisi in regime permanente dei sistemi elettrici trifase dissimmetrici)";
After Master Degree (Laurea vecchio ordinamento) he started his research in collaboration with the group "Electric Power Systems" at University of Cassino;
from 01/06/96 to 31/07/96 he received a scholarship from Ansaldo CRIS within the European Project "Hosting and Training of Researchers on Study and Testing Components and System for Urban Electrical and Rail Transport";
in 1996 he received a scholarship from the National Committee of Researches (CNR) on the subject "Industrial plants and automation (Impiantistica ed automazione industriale)";
from 2001 he is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE);
from 2002 he is a member of the Italian Electrotechnical Association (AEIT);
from 2009 to 2012 he has been the President of the Cassino's section of the AEIT;
in 2007 he presented a contribution to the Public Consultation Document E06-PC-17 (E06-PC-17-20): "Towards voltage quality regulation in Europe" of the European Energy Regulators CEER & ERGEG. The comments were subsequently reported in the document E07-EQS-15-04 "Towards voltage quality regulation in Europe Evaluation of the Comments Received" of 18 July 2007;
he is a member of the Italian Chapter Executive Committee of the IEEE Power Engineering Society;
in 2008 he visited the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Northeastern University in Boston for research activity
he is co-author of two chapters (Chapter 8 of Part III: Probabilistic Modeling for Network Analysis; Chapter 11 of Part IV: Probabilistic Harmonic Indices) of the IEEE Technical Publication: "Time-Varying Waveform Distortions in Power Systems", dell' Harmonics Working Group of the IEEE Power Engineering Society (Editor PF Ribeiro);

In 1996 he conducted experimental research activities under contract given by the "Department of Industrial Engineering,
University of Cassino (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale) for modeling wind and photovoltaic production units;
in 1996 he conducted experimental research activities under scholarship given by the "Innovative research consortium for the South (Consorzio Ricerche Innovative per il Sud CRIS)", of Ansaldo Trasporti for the project: "Probabilistic techniques for the analysis of harmonic distortion: modeling and testing of an AC railway line (Tecniche probabilistiche per l'analisi della distorsione armonica: modello di una tratta ferroviaria in alternata e sperimentazione)" as part of the European Project "Hosting and Training of Researchers on the Study and Testing of Components and Systems for Urban and Rail Transport Electrical" within the framework program "Human Capital and Mobility - Access to Large Scale Facilities";
in 1999 he has been engaged in the experimental research activities at the "Railway Vehicle Testing Room" of the "Innovative research consortium for the South (Consorzio Ricerche Innovative per il Sud CRIS)" of Ansaldo Transporti within the European Project: "Research activities on techniques to analyse harmonic distortion due to modern AC rails and investigation of R/X ratio of 25 kV realistic equipment", as part of the European Project" Training and Research on the Study and Testing of Components and Systems for Railway Transport (TRAIN)" within the framework program "Training and Mobility of Researchers - Access to Large Scale Facilities ");
since 2002 he conducted research activities with prof. Ali Abur currently professor and Chair at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of Northeastern University in Boston
Coordination and management of research groups He has been responsible for the research funds (FAR and ex MURST 60%) given by University of Cassino for supporting the research activities of power system group, in the year 2004, and in the years 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 e 2015;
in 2005, he has been the scientific responsible of the contract with Nuovo Pignone Firenze (Massa Carrara)for the experimental testing the disturbances due to large power drive.
Other activities
in 2007 he worked as expert under a contract given by the "Scientific and Technological Park of Southern Lazio (Parco scientifico e Tecnologico del Lazio Meridionale PALMER)" to verify technical and economical feasibility of renewable sources power plants;
in 2009 he worked as expert under a contract given by the "Scientific and Technological Park of Southern Lazio (Parco scientifico e Tecnologico del Lazio Meridionale PALMER)" to verify the respect of renewable sources power plants with the project.
In 2005 he is a co-tutor of the Ph.D thesis " Sull’Analisi in Regime Permanente dei Sistemi Elettrici Dissimmetrici " of the candidate Vittorio Di Vito, XVII Cycle of Ph.D Course in Electrical Engineering and Information (Ingegneria Elettrica e dell'Informazione ) of the University of Cassino, Department of Industrial Engineering (Dipartimento di Ingegneria Industriale)

Pietro Varilone has conducted research activities on topics related to electric power systems, and has published over 80 papers on international journals, proceedings of national and international conferences (63 on scopus).
